The consolidated business results for fiscal 2009 greatly exceeded the initial forecasts. Sales came to 175,700 million yen (down 2.8% over the previous year), with an operating profit of 12,100 million yen (up 15.8%), ordinary profit of 11,800 million yen (up 44.7%), and net profit of 6,500 million yen (up 80.3%)
Over the past 10 years, Unipres has continuously anticipated market developments and achieved growth as a company by reorganizing our car body parts and transmission parts businesses in Japan and aggressively pursuing the expansion of our business overseas. At the same time, by promoting thorough global streamlining through UPS (Unipres Production System) activities, we have striven to strengthen our profit structure and secure profits. As a result, we succeeded in realizing our highest ever profits even in fiscal 2009, which began amid the global recession.
With the aim of expanding our global business, Unipres completed the development of mass production systems in Thailand in February 2010 and in India in May 2010. Furthermore, we decided to launch our first overseas transmission parts business in China, where the automotive market is enjoying rapid growth, and are promoting plant construction towards the planned start of operation in March 2011. We will continue to improve the technologies we have developed over the years with the aim of further expanding the transmission business.
In fiscal 2010, as the future of the automotive industry remains uncertain amid the global recession, we can expect the continuation of a severe business environment requiring even greater cost competiveness and technological innovation. Aiming to be the global No. 1 company, we will continue to deepen UPS activities and further increase our profitability and competitiveness.
In pursuit of these endeavors, I ask for your redoubled support and encouragement.
June 2010
Satoru Nito, President
