    of automobiles

    • Frontal collision

      In order to protect passengers from a frontal collision, distortion of the passenger compartment needs to be minimized. On the other hand, the portion of the vehicle in front of the passenger compartment needs to be designed to change shape so that it absorbs the impact of the collision. This requires highly sophisticated components: for example, the front side member is a structural component running from the front of the vehicle to the side of the passenger compartment, so its front portion must crumple easily under stress while the rear portion retains its shape.

    • Side-on collision

      In order to protect passengers from side-on collision, the other vehicle must be prevented from encroaching into the passenger compartment. Components such as the center pillar and side sill need an especially high degree of strength, since they receive direct impact.

    • Rear-end collision

      As well as minimizing distortion of the car body to protect passengers in the car in the event of a rear-end collision, it is also vital to prevent fuel tank damage. For example, in addition to having a very complex shape to secure luggage space in the trunk, the rear side member requires highly sophisticated press forming technology to ensure that it absorbs impacts in the event of a collision.

    In addition to fundamental vehicle performance such as traveling, steering and braking, a high level of body rigidity is necessary to achieve stable cruising when making lane changes and turns during high-speed cruising. The rigidity of the steering member, which supports the steering wheel and other components of car steering mechanism, is particularly crucial.
